Connecting Bluesky: app passwords, and why it takes a minute
Bluesky is the only network you can connect without registering a developer app or waiting for review. Here is how, and what an app password actually is.

Every other network in this list requires a developer app, an OAuth flow and — for most of them — a review process measured in days. Bluesky requires a handle and an app password, and works immediately.
That is not a small difference if you are trying to see whether a tool works before committing to it.
What an app password is
It is a separate credential you generate for one application, revocable independently of your real password. If a tool holding one is compromised, you revoke that password and nothing else about your account changes.
Create one in Bluesky under Settings → App Passwords. Give it the name of the tool so you can tell later which is which.
What it can and cannot do
- ✓It can post, read and act as your account — treat it like a password
- ✓It cannot change your real password or email
- ✓You can revoke it at any time without affecting other apps
- ✓It does not expire on its own, so revoke ones you stop using
Why the difference exists
Bluesky is built on an open protocol, so the network is not the gatekeeper of who may build on it in the way a closed platform is. That is a genuine architectural difference rather than a policy choice, and it is why Bluesky support in most tools arrived quickly and quietly.
